There have been so many times in my life (Heck, in my day!) when I catch myself second-guessing; asking myself, “Am I doing this right?”
Doing it right. Rationally, I can tell myself that there is no right way. But it feels like someone, somewhere out there, has found the secret to living, to creating, to loving. Which means that the way that I’m doing it isn’t quite good enough.
I have found myself grabbing one more book or signing up for one more class to gather more information and find out “what the experts say,” to alleviate my fears & to prolong taking any real action. It becomes a cycle that keep things safe and helps keep doubts at bay.
I tell myself that since I am gathering information, then I am still moving forward, but truthfully it’s my default. Risk-taking, stepping out of my comfort zone & owning my own wisdom is really where it all happens!
Danielle LaPorte says, “Don’t let the desire for perfection become procrastination.” I could reread this 20 times a day to remind myself that perfect is a myth. And the desire for perfection keeps me on the sidelines.
There isn’t a right way to create a home, raise children, or be a spouse. There are a lot of opinions out there, but at some point I have to trust my own instincts and live in the knowledge that “it doesn’t have to be perfect to be good.” The idea of perfect can’t keep me from moving forward & creating something truly great! And the more that I step out and let go of the right way, the more that I will discover that what I have is absolutely right for ME.
Do you find yourself stuck because you might not “do it right?”
The next time you notice you are second-guessing yourself & avoiding an activity or project because you might not do it right, catch yourself! Repeat the phrase “it doesn’t have to be perfect to be good” to yourself 3 times. Then gather some courage & take one tiny step forward.
Together let’s create something good. Don’t let fear stop you from stepping forward and having the life & the home that allows you to do your great work!
